Retired in God's country!

Paydirt and Predators!

Sherry wanted some dirt to refresh the coops and lacking any, I ventured out with the tractor and a box blade and started scraping the NE corner of our open field. I chose this area because it is where we will eventually have a sanitary lagoon for any future building and the more dirt I can remove now, the less will need to be done when we tackle that project.

However, once I got the grass out of the way and started scraping, we found a mother-lode of rich black dirt – no rocks. Considering the rest of our property (including the garden) appears to be class 5 (road base) gravel, this was a huge and pleasant surprise. With more than enough to do the coops, I just kept scraping and now have a sizable pile for our planting and future needs. The best part is when we need more, I can just scrape it up and keep making that pit deeper. It was quite the pleasant surprise for us.

That was a bright spot for a day that didn’t start off so well.

Earlier, like every morning, we let the chickens out of their coops around 7:30 and fed them and refreshed their water(s). All 3 coops now share both “runs” as well as the entire fenced off barnyard area, which gives them a huge and safe (we thought) area for foraging, dust bathing and exploring the tall weeds we leave for them.

Sadly, later in the morning I was working out behind the barnyard and was alarmed to see the remains of one of our newest hens in the corner of the barnyard by the back gate. It was obviously killed by a predator that tried to drag it through the fence, was unable to and left it there partially eaten. We are unsure of what it was at this point. I’ve caught possum, racoons and skunks back there previously overnight. All are capable of that mayhem but they are usually opportunistic and typically will only attack a sleeping hen that is perched rather than an active one that can escape – as well as dealing with the rooster tasked with protecting the flock.

Also, this was a daytime attack and all 3 of those critters are mostly nocturnal. We are guessing this was the work of a fox. We’ve seen them back there behind the shop and barnyard, but in 3 years have never shown any interest in our birds. Now, my dilemma is that now that it has a taste, will it return to the smorgasbord for another entrée?

I guess I’ll be watching the girls closely for a while, with my rifle close at hand. Long term, Sherry is working with Cooper so he can be trusted to be with the birds unattended. He seems to be learning well so hopefully, he can become our LGD.

A Recurring Story Every Monday

I seem to see these stories every week, usually on Mondays as new polling is released over the weekend.

Unless you remain embedded in your Bluesky Echo Chamber, you’ll realize this particular direction has been constant and reveals a sharp decline in support for the Democratic Party since the 2024 election, as frustrated voters say the party has drifted far from the concerns of everyday Americans. Instead of focusing on inflation, border security, or public safety, Democrats are increasingly seen as obsessed with destroying President Donald Trump’s legacy, woke virtue signaling, and identity politics.

A poll conducted by Unite the Country, a Democratic super PAC, shows that many voters – especially white men, Hispanic men, and working-class Americans — see the Democratic Party as “woke,” “weak,” and disconnected from everyday realities. The party’s approval rating has dipped below 35 percent, raising serious concerns about its ability to rebound before the 2028 presidential race. Adding to the challenge, enthusiasm among the Democratic base has continued to decline following the 2024 election, signaling deep frustration within the party’s own ranks.

Democratic strategist Rodell Mollineau acknowledged that the Democratic Party is facing a serious perception problem. He said many Americans, beyond just the MAGA base, see the party negatively, and unless Democrats accept this reality, it will be difficult to make progress. He emphasized that this view isn’t limited to far-right critics but also includes voters who should naturally support the party.

A CNN/SSRS poll from earlier this year shows the Democratic Party facing historically low approval, with just 29 percent of Americans viewing the party favorably—the lowest level since CNN began tracking the data. Even Democratic-leaning voters are unhappy, with 58 percent saying the party needs significant changes or a total overhaul. Only 16 percent of voters say Democrats provide strong leadership, while 43 percent believe neither party offers effective leaders. The numbers reflect growing frustration, especially among young and independent voters, posing serious challenges for Democrats as they look ahead to the 2026 elections.

Curious?

I am curious on how the resistance can instantly “turn on” their outrage at just the right moment, AND have so many clueless lemmings willing to trash their own integrity to echo those claims.

From just the past few days:

  1. After taking out the Iranian nuclear facilities, we saw the (expected) cries for impeachment from the left because Trump never got congress to authorize the strike. Never mind that congress hasn’t been involved in such a conflict since WW2. All previous presidents have also ordered such strikes without seeking or needing such approval. But now, because it is Trump, such an approval is mandated or impeachment is in order. Thankfully, congress already shot that idea down.
  2. An ongoing issue is the deportation of illegal aliens. Again, this is NOT anything new to this country as the laws being enforced have been on the books for decades and no one voiced any significant opposition prior to now. But now, because Trump is finally doing what the previous administration said couldn’t be done, there is instant outrage. They will have you believe that he is violating their civil rights by denying their right to appear before a judge – refusing to acknowledge that in these immigration matters, their right to do so doesn’t exist. As was amply illustrated under the Obama regime that deported over 3 million illegals under the exact same circumstances.

Anyone care to explain this?

Exterior Wood Preservative

I wish I would have seen this a few years ago.

In our location, we have access to nearly 20 sawmills within 10 miles – with a small Amish mill right across the road where I get a lot of freshly cut pine. That pine is not kiln dried or treated in any way so I need to work against warping (as it dries) as well as preservation going forward.

Up to now, my method was simply to get someone to paint eventually but that’s not ever a huge priority for me and some gates, fences and outdoor projects remain completely natural – with the expectation I’ll need to replace in a few years when they eventually rot.

I think I will give this a try. With a very modest “Cylinder Index” of only 30+/Rural, I will still certainly have a regular and ample supply of used oil available.

Crime of the Century

“But the idea that we did not know about this for the years leading up to the presidential campaign, we all saw it with our own eyes, video after video, speech after speech statement after statement, the Hurr report, the fact that we had people saying today, ‘oh, I didn’t know, we had no idea, is outrageous.’ That’s number one. Number two, the cover-up is outrageous. And number three, people were arguing with a straight face that this man could serve four more years until, of course, it became untenable at the debate,”

– Scott Jennings

In my view, people need to be jailed for this travesty.

The “Good Life” in MN?

Remember this? My how the state has fallen.

Since MN is #6 on this top-10 list of the worst states to move to, and is now regularly appearing on other similar lists, I guess our relocation was a good idea after all.

Since those that brought this notoriety on a previously great place to live continue to lobby for more of the same, all I can say is there are other options.

Before the riots rekindle when Derek Chauvin is inevitably pardoned in the near future, I’d get out while you can!

Where are the Fathers, Brothers, Husbands and Boyfriends?

20 years ago, this wouldn’t ever have a chance to be an issue. Males caught in female locker rooms would be arrested and charged if they were lucky. Or if not, they would be “disciplined” by the men in the lives of these poor girls.

What has happened to the men of this nation? Perhaps, that conduit between masculinity and the “White Dudes for Harris” estrogen club, Tim Walz could code-talk to us watching football and fixing our trucks, to explain the logic here and put us at ease.

Reservation for the Martin Family

We put up a Purple Martin house in October of 2023. It was fun to construct and I planned to add a few more, once the Martins arrived. Unfortunately, last summer was disappointing as various other birds took the spots and there were no signs of any Martins present at all.

Well, the planets have aligned this year and we’re excited to have some new feathered residents to welcome to the farm. There seems to be quite a few of them and most seem to be fairly young – with only a few fully developed adults.

But they certainly seem to be enjoying the place and there is quite a bit of activity building nests inside with many birds coming and going continually. Close to sundown, they all take to the air depleting our area of flying insects so we are happy to have them around.

Initially, I thought we’d put up the house and be done with it. I have since learned there is a bit more to it. The houses need to be cleaned out after they migrate south. This one is bolted to the top of a 15′ 4×4 so I’ll be changing that design to make access easier. I’ve also learned about a threat to these beautiful birds by sparrows and starlings, who compete for nesting spaces as well as attack the very young in their nests. So I’ll be modifying the openings to deter those attacks as well.

They really are entertaining though. I must walk between the garage and the shop a dozen times a day and pass right under their house, where they all greet me and will then take to the air to accompany me on my trek. They are quite active and it’s a hoot to watch them during their swooping flights – chattering all the way.

It’s really an ideal location for them though. They are on the corner of the garden, just at the edge of our farmyard with 9 acres of pasture open to them right out their door. There are 3 (maybe 5) more locations around the garden where I plan to add more so I’ll be building some more houses this winter.

Another Devastating Protest?

This isn’t the usual garden-variety liberal whining; it’s an outright call to arms, a tired but dangerous maneuver pulled straight from the left’s playbook to incite chaos whenever it’s knocked out of power. The Democratic Party’s poll numbers have plummeted to historic lows, and now it’s scrambling for any message that can ignite its radicalized base. The strategy couldn’t be more obvious; when desperation sets in, Democrats fall back on the only tactic they know — fueling social unrest, just like they did during the 2020 BLM riots.

Exactly, how many calls do they need to go out? There have been at least a half dozen declared days of “mass protests”, boycotts and targeted shutdown declared already. They’ve all passed with little notice or impact, other than the dozen or so idiots chanting outside of Walmart.

Then there are calls for a General Strike. That effort (started with the repeal of Roe v. Wade in 2022) requires over 10 million signees before they launch their devastating attack to cripple the administration. To date, they’ve gathered a total of about 324k. The problem is, they need about 250k each month to reach their goal before this administration has completed its term. At the rate they are now building support (9k/mo), they’ll finally reach that goal in 1150 years!

I’d call them petulant children, except that would be an insult to petulant children everywhere. Once again, I’ll say that the evil orange man should simply declare support for oxygen, and all this nonsense would end as they try to hold their breath until they get their way.
